Hypochlorous Acid for Skin: Why Dermatologists Love This Skincare Powerhouse

By Marianna Blyumin-Karasik, MD, FAAD, Board-Certified Dermatologist and Founder of Stamina® Cosmetics

When patients ask me if there is one skincare ingredient I always keep within reach, my answer is almost always the same: hypochlorous acid.

This remarkable molecule is naturally produced by your own immune system to help defend, calm, and repair the skin. Today, stabilized hypochlorous acid has become one of dermatology's most trusted ingredients because it supports skin health in multiple ways: before breakouts develop, during periods of irritation, and after cosmetic procedures.

At Stamina® Cosmetics, hypochlorous acid is at the heart of both our Stamina Mist® and Stamina Serum®. While they share the same hero ingredient, each product was intentionally designed for a different role in a complete Stress-Resilient Skincare™ routine.

Let's explore why.

What Is Hypochlorous Acid?

Hypochlorous acid (HOCl) is a naturally occurring molecule produced by white blood cells as part of the body's innate immune defense. When your skin encounters a threat, your neutrophils generate HOCl to neutralize microbes and help signal the healing process forward.

In skincare, stabilized hypochlorous acid is valued for its ability to support healthy skin while remaining gentle enough for sensitive and compromised skin.

Research has demonstrated several key properties:

  • Antimicrobial: helps reduce the microbes associated with breakouts and irritation
  • Anti-inflammatory: helps quiet visible redness and reactivity
  • Wound-healing support: widely used in peri-procedural and post-procedure care
  • Skin-calming: comfortable on reactive, stressed skin
  • Barrier-friendly: does not strip or over-dry
  • Microbiome supportive: antiseptic without disrupting the skin's delicate ecosystem

It is one of the rare ingredients that can be both highly effective and exceptionally well tolerated. If you'd like the deeper science, I wrote about it here: Hypochlorous Acid: Skin Care Wellness in a Bottle.

Why Dermatologists Love Hypochlorous Acid

As dermatologists, we are constantly looking for ingredients that do more than target a single concern. Hypochlorous acid is incredibly versatile.

It may help support:

  • acne-prone skin
  • rosacea-prone skin
  • eczema-prone skin
  • post-procedure recovery
  • irritated and reactive skin
  • sensitive skin
  • athletes and active lifestyles
  • travel-related skin stress
  • environmental exposure
  • everyday skin wellness

It is one of the few ingredients I recommend across a wide range of patients, because it supports the skin's natural healing and defense mechanisms rather than simply masking symptoms. In other words, it behaves like a skin adaptogen, helping skin adapt rather than forcing it into submission.

Is Hypochlorous Acid Good for Acne and Breakouts?

Hypochlorous acid helps address one of the drivers of blemishes, the microbial and inflammatory environment on the skin's surface, without the dryness, peeling, or barrier damage that often comes with aggressive acne actives.

That makes it a thoughtful companion for people already using retinoids or exfoliating acids, and a gentler option for adults whose breakouts flare with stress. If that sounds familiar, you may also want to read Why We Still Break Out in Our 40s and 50s and Acne, Stamina and Wellness.

Can You Use Hypochlorous Acid After Laser or In-Office Treatments?

Many dermatologists and plastic surgeons incorporate hypochlorous acid into peri-procedural protocols because of its antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and wound-supportive properties.

This is an area I have studied directly. Our team's research on the peri-procedural use of hypochlorous acid mist for healing and cosmesis of the face after laser was published in the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology, and you can review our full body of evidence on the Stamina Evidence page.

As always, follow the guidance of your treating provider regarding post-procedure care.

One Ingredient. Two Different Jobs.

This brings me to the question I receive most often:

"If both products contain hypochlorous acid, which one should I use?"

The answer is simple: both, but for different purposes. Same dermatologist-loved ingredient. Different delivery. Different job.

Stamina Mist®: Your Daily Protective Reset

Think of Stamina Mist® as your skin's refreshing shield throughout the day. Designed as a lightweight protective spray toner, it delivers an instant refresh while helping maintain a cleaner, calmer skin environment.

  • Maskne
  • Heat and humidity
  • Post-procedure soothing

Its fast-drying formula makes it easy to use multiple times a day without disrupting makeup or sunscreen, which is exactly why it lives in my bag, my car, and my treatment rooms. For more on using it on the move, see 5 Travel Skincare Tips and Work Out Skin Care.

Stamina Serum®: Your Longer-Acting Recovery Treatment

Stamina Serum® takes hypochlorous acid a step further. Think of it as your long-term breakouts, blemish and irritation remedy, ideal to use twice daily for therapeutic stressed skin benefits.

Its soothing gel-serum texture stays on the skin longer, allowing prolonged contact with irritated or blemish-prone areas.

Ideal for:

  • Breakouts
  • Blemishes
  • Sensitive skin
  • Redness
  • Morning and evening skincare
  • Overnight recovery
  • Ongoing calming support

While the Mist protects and refreshes, the Serum focuses on longer-term skin recovery.

Beyond Skincare: Building Stress-Resilient Skin

Healthy skin is not built by one ingredient alone. A strong skin barrier is built by daily habits that compound over time.

Support your skin by:

  • Sleeping 7 to 9 hours
  • Eating a colorful, nutrient-rich diet
  • Staying hydrated
  • Managing stress intentionally
  • Wearing SPF daily
  • Avoiding smoking
  • Exercising regularly

These habits work together with your skincare routine to help your skin adapt to the demands of modern life. If you want to understand the mind and skin link more deeply, read Stress, Skin & Stamina and The Science of Neurocosmetics.

A Dermatologist's Perspective

One of the reasons I created both Stamina Mist® and Stamina Serum® was because I saw a gap in skincare.

Patients needed more than another acne treatment or another facial spray. They needed products that help skin adapt, recover, and build resilience over time.

That philosophy became the foundation of Stamina® Cosmetics and our commitment to Stress-Resilient Skincare™: clinical efficacy paired with emotional intelligence and intentional daily ritual.

You Got This.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is hypochlorous acid safe for everyday use?

Yes. Stabilized hypochlorous acid is generally well tolerated and suitable for daily use, including on sensitive skin. As with any skincare product, follow product directions and consult your healthcare provider if you have specific concerns.

Can I use hypochlorous acid after laser treatments?

Many dermatologists incorporate hypochlorous acid into peri-procedural skincare because of its antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and wound-supportive properties. Always follow the guidance of your treating provider regarding post-procedure care.

Which is better: a hypochlorous acid mist or a serum?

Neither is universally "better." They serve different purposes. A mist is ideal for quick refreshment and frequent use throughout the day, while a gel-serum offers longer skin contact for ongoing soothing and recovery.

Can I use both the mist and the serum?

Absolutely. Many people use the Mist in the morning and throughout the day, and apply the Serum twice daily, morning and evening, as part of a complete stress-resilient skincare routine.

Does hypochlorous acid work for rosacea-prone or sensitive skin?

Hypochlorous acid is often chosen for reactive skin because it is calming and barrier-friendly rather than stripping. For more on managing redness-prone skin, see How to Manage Rosacea.

Can I layer hypochlorous acid with my other actives?

Yes. Hypochlorous acid layers comfortably under moisturizer and sunscreen, and is often used alongside retinoids or exfoliating acids to help keep skin comfortable. Apply the Mist first on clean skin, allow it to dry, then continue your routine.
