Midlife Skin? Join the Club. How to Build Skin Stamina Through Perimenopause and Menopause

Written by Marianna Blyumin-Karasik, MD, FAAD, board-certified dermatologist and founder of Stamina® Cosmetics. Reviewed October 2026.

Quick answer

In midlife, perimenopause and menopause, shifting hormones can leave skin drier, more sensitive and, for some women, prone to breakouts again. The answer is not more products or stronger actives. It is a simpler, gentler routine that supports the skin barrier, hydrates consistently, and gives skin room to recover, with topical adaptogens to help skin adapt to change. Skin stamina means supporting your skin through change, not chasing perfect skin.

If your skin is suddenly drier, more sensitive, or breaking out in ways it hasn't in years, you're not imagining it. And you're definitely not alone.

"Midlife skin issues? Join the club," I tell my patients. Midlife can bring changes to our skin along with the hormonal changes, and October, with both Menopause Awareness Month and Emotional Wellness Month, is a good time to talk about it. Hormonal shifts, life stress, sleep and emotional wellbeing all show up on our skin. So the question for this season isn't how to fight your skin. It's this: how can I build more skin stamina in midlife?

What changes in midlife skin?

The American Academy of Dermatology notes that menopause can bring skin changes such as dryness, sensitivity and acne for some women. During perimenopause and menopause, shifting hormone levels can affect how well skin holds moisture and how easily it reacts. In my practice, women most often notice:

  • Dryness that their usual moisturizer no longer handles
  • Sensitivity to products they have used for years (if you're unsure whether your skin is sensitive or simply stressed, read Stressed Skin vs Sensitive Skin)
  • New breakouts, sometimes for the first time since their teens
  • A duller, more tired look, especially during stressful stretches

Every woman's experience is different, and there isn't one routine that fits everyone. If a change persists or concerns you, talk with a board-certified dermatologist.

Hormones are only part of the picture. Midlife is also when stress tends to peak, and stress and skin feed each other. I wrote about that loop in Breaking the Stress–Skin Cycle in Menopause and about the science behind it in Skin–Brain Axis Resilience.

Why more products isn't the answer

When skin starts changing, the instinct is to add more: stronger actives, more steps, more potent ingredients. I recommend the opposite.

As we move into our 40s, our skin becomes more sensitive. So instead of overwhelming it with lots of products or harsh and potent ingredients, we should nurture it: protect, balance and revitalize. That is the same Stamina® philosophy I apply to every kind of stressed skin.

You don't need ten new products. You need a few that work with your skin while it adapts. If you want to know where to start, the free skin quiz takes two minutes.

5 things your skin may need more of in midlife

  1. Barrier support. A stronger barrier helps skin hold moisture and stay calmer when life gets busy.
  2. Hydration. Lightweight, consistent hydration helps offset the dryness many women notice in midlife.
  3. Thoughtful exfoliation. Gentle, occasional exfoliation keeps texture smooth without stripping sensitive skin.
  4. Inflammation-conscious care. Calming, fragrance-free formulas are kinder to reactive skin.
  5. Recovery. Skin needs time and support to bounce back from stress, sleep loss and environmental exposure.

Where skin adaptogens come in

That's why I love topical adaptogens. These ingredients help our skin adapt to various changes, such as midlife shifts. I co-authored a systematic review of topical adaptogens in dermatology, and you can read a plain-language version in Skin Stress and Adaptogens.

Stamina® Intention Moisturizer is formulated with a blend of topical adaptogens, including curcumin, cordyceps, Rheum rhaponticum, gotu kola and guarana, to nourish skin and support a refreshed, healthy-looking glow. It is lightweight, oil-free and non-comedogenic, so it hydrates without weighing down skin that is also prone to breakouts. The full ingredient list is on our Ingredients page. For skin that feels irritated or reactive, Stamina® Mist is an alcohol-free, fragrance-free toner with stabilized hypochlorous acid (HOCl). A few spritzes help calm the look of irritation and support blemish-prone skin, on the face or body. If you want to go deeper on the science, read why dermatologists love hypochlorous acid, and see the consumer and clinical studies on our Evidence page.

Skincare as a mindful moment

Midlife is often one of the busiest seasons of life. That is why I treat my routine as more than a set of steps. As an integrative dermatologist, skincare for me is also a mindful moment: a moment to set intentions and enhance emotional wellness. This is the heart of neurocosmetics and the skin–mind connection.

Try it tonight: Pause. Apply. Breathe. Intend. State Affirmation. Turn your skincare routine into a resilience skin ritual.

Skin stamina means supporting your skin through change, not chasing perfect skin. Midlife is a new chapter for your skin, and your skincare can evolve with it. That is what I mean by Skinspan: extending the years your skin stays healthy, comfortable and resilient, rather than chasing a younger-looking version of it.

I use Stamina Mist and Intention Moisturizer as part of my personal routine as I go through my own midlife skin journey. I wish you the best on your journey. Remember, YOU GOT THIS!

Midlife skin: frequently asked questions

Why is my skin suddenly dry in my 40s?

During perimenopause and menopause, shifting hormone levels can affect how well skin holds moisture, so a moisturizer that used to be enough may no longer be. Consistent, lightweight hydration and barrier support usually help more than switching to heavier or stronger products.

Can menopause cause acne?

Yes, for some women. The American Academy of Dermatology lists acne among the skin changes menopause can bring. Because midlife skin is also more sensitive, treat breakouts gently: a calming HOCl mist, a targeted serum on blemish-prone areas, and non-comedogenic hydration, rather than harsh drying treatments.

Does Stamina® treat menopause or hormonal skin?

No. Stamina® products are cosmetics, not treatments for menopause or any medical condition. They are designed to support skin through change: calming the look of irritation, hydrating, and helping skin adapt with topical adaptogens. If a change persists or concerns you, see a board-certified dermatologist.

What are topical adaptogens?

Topical adaptogens are botanical ingredients, such as curcumin, cordyceps, Rheum rhaponticum, gotu kola and guarana, that help skin adapt to stressors. Dr. MBK co-authored a systematic review proposing how to identify and categorize skin adaptogens in dermatology.

What is the simplest midlife skincare routine?

In the morning, a calming mist, a targeted serum on blemish-prone areas, a moisturizer suited to your skin, and daily broad-spectrum sunscreen. In the evening, cleanse gently, then repeat the mist, serum and moisturizer. Add a gentle exfoliating mask once a week if your skin tolerates it.
