Our skin is not failing us, it’s signaling.
This article is for my colleagues, and for every medical provider, caregiver, and woman in medicine who has been running on empty and watching it show up on her skin.
The Burnout Epidemic Is a Skin Crisis Too
Physician burnout isn’t new. But post-pandemic, it has reached a scale that the medical community can no longer ignore. Studies show that over 60% of physicians report symptoms of burnout, with rates even higher among women in medicine and frontline specialties.
What’s less discussed is how that burnout manifests physically on our skin. Chronic stress elevates cortisol, disrupts the skin barrier, triggers inflammation, and accelerates aging. The signs are unmistakable: persistent breakouts, rosacea flares, worsening eczema, dullness, dark circles, and sensitivity that seem to appear overnight. As a dermatologist, I see the face of skin burnout every day, literally.
This is due to the bidirectional skin-brain axis. As our brain sends signals to skin that it's under stress. The skin responds back with amplified signals. The negative psychosocial effect of skin issues further augments these messages.
